What happened to...
The notion of Communal ownership? Reserves were like that. People were part of the community. Everyone had a stake in what happened in the homes and the whole community. Now we see that there is a push to privatize the Reserve? Manny Jules wants us to be able to sell off the Reserve. Let business come in on Traditional Territories. Oh well, I guess things change.
We don't think about our Children's children anymore. It's all about now. What have you done for me lately? Not yesterday but today.
Paramount in the Native community was balance and that included thinking for all. Not one or two, but for all.
It looks like we've lost that, what do you think Manny Jules, Patrick Brazeau, Joseph Quesnel?

ReplyDeleteI have seen this before. In a time when All were happy. And content to serve not only the community, but the land, and the Great Spirit that gave us life. But then the Serpent came.

Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, "Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?"
And the woman said unto the serpent, "We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die."
And the serpent said unto the woman, "Ye shall not surely die! For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil."
And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.
Things change my friend, because we allow them to. And even want them to. As we also, become enamored with the temptation to, "become as the gods".
It is especially hard today, I think. As, through television, we have the whole world to compare ourselves to. And in seeing what they (the gods) have. Pride, envy, jealousy, and greed, become our will.
Nevertheless, and as I hope you can now see.
"The more things change, the more they stay the same".
For here we are again. Right back where we started from. Right back where it All started (in Genesis 3). And in deed, making the Very Same Decision, all over again.
History Repeats itself. And yet, we learn not.
Oh, but for ambition. And the aspiration to become as the gods. Contentment, and peace, would be ours forever.
Thank you for the interesting comment. I do really appreciate the wisdom of Teachings (no matter where they come from). I do appreciate how the fruits can look good and actually be filled with worms.
ReplyDeleteI am not a fan of "original sin". I can't reconcile the beauty of life being tainted with that label. And it is even more troubling that original sin was due to Woman, the givers of life.
